In early February 2026, the Sun unleashed a torrent of back-to-back solar flares. One specific active region on the Sun was responsible for over 50 of them! Here’s a close up look at this very busy active region through the eyes of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the Sun 24/7 from Earth orbit.👇 🤩 | NASA Solar System Exploration

On Oct. 24-25, our Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite watched as a solar prominence rose up above the Sun’s surface, twisted around, then became elongated and broke away from the Sun. Prominences are relatively cool clouds of solar material (called plasma) that are tethered above the Sun’s surface by magnetic forces. Although tiny on the scale of the Sun, this prominence stretched out about ten times the diameter of Earth — see Earth inset for scale. These images were taken in a wavelength of

We've been studying the Sun from afar for decades, and now we're going where the action is. Parker Solar Probe launches this summer to get closer to the Sun than any spacecraft has ever gone. Throughout its seven-year mission, its four suites of instruments will send back invaluable data that will help scientists answer foundational questions about the Sun, like: Why is the Sun's corona so much hotter than its surface? How is the solar wind accelerated to supersonic speeds? And what drives solar

The Sun’s only visible active region sputtered and spurted and eventually unleashed a small solar flare on Feb. 7, captured here by our Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite. The flare appears as a brief, bright flash about midway through the half-day-long clip. Normally, a flare this small might not catch much attention, but solar activity is increasingly rare as the Sun is slowly approaching solar minimum, a natural low point in its 11-year activity cycle. Have you heard? We are now officially in the solar maximum phase! That means we’re in the part of the 11-year solar cycle where solar eruptions, geomagnetic storms, and auroras are most likely to occur. But how do scientists tell where we are in the solar cycle? They count sunspots! Those dark solar splotches tell a story: As solar activity waxes and wanes, so does the sunspot count. But don’t just take our word for it – try it yourself! Earlier this week, scientists reported a unique eruption on the Sun that had components of three separate types of eruptions — a solar ‘Rosetta Stone’ that may help scientists unlock the mechanism behind all classes of solar blasts. On top of solar explosions, the Sun has a huge range of other dynamic phenomena and events that shape space, from the surface of the Sun and across billions of miles of the solar system. This Sunday, take in our star through the eyes of our Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite, which watches the Sun constantly from space. A developing filament near the Sun’s edge churned and twisted as it rotated into view of the Solar Dynamics Observatory on Nov. 16-17. Filaments are cooler and often unstable clouds of particles suspended above the Sun's surface by magnetic forces. These images were taken in a wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light, which is typically invisible to our eyes, bu

In September, scientists announced that our Sun has entered a new cycle. ☀️🔄 As sunspots and flares, signs of a new solar cycle, bubble from the Sun’s surface, scientists wonder what this next cycle will look like. The short answer is, probably a lot like the last — that is, the past 11 years of the Sun’s life, since that’s the average length of any given cycle. But the longer story involves a panel of experts that meets once a decade, a fleet of Sun-studying satellites, and dozens of complicat

Our friend Chris asked if I could show the various wavelengths that we are using to observed the Sun. And since I love getting requests, let's take a look! Thanks Chris for the suggestion! Telescopes help distant objects appear bigger, but this is only one of their advantages. Telescopes can also collect light in ranges that our eyes alone cannot see, providing scientists ways of observing a whole host of material and processes that would otherwise be inaccessible.
